Reverse Back the Car: Reduplication as Language Variation in Nigerian English Usage

This paper investigates the use of reduplicated English elements as aspects Nigerian usage in speech events among participants Calabar, a multilingual city Southern Nigeria. The study adopts Variationist Sociolinguistics and Sociopragmatic Competence theoretical foundations because both account for occurrence variation semantic change resulting from interference L1 other factors. data were generated through two-year field investigation by means participant observation audiotape recording interactions who are bi/multilingual one or more indigenous languages. active sites where extracted include University environment, markets, churches social gatherings, discussants on television radio programmes. findings indicate that cut across ages, gender, status, diverse ethnolinguistic educational backgrounds Nigerians.
